今回は「ボブ・マーリーとラスタファリズムの出会い」についてのお話です。
ボブ・マーリーとラスタファリズムが出会ったのは10代前半と言われています。
ボブ・マーリーの生立ちは少々複雑で、当時ジャマイカ最大の建設会社を経営していた白人の父（61歳）とアフリカ系ジャマイカ人の母（16歳）の間に生まれました。両親はマーリーの生後すぐに別れてしまい、母親に引き取られます。父親はマーリーが10歳の時に亡くなりますが、自分と母を捨てた父に対して大きな憤りを感じながら幼少期を過ごしていたそうで、そういった思いがラスタ思想への傾倒を加速させたとも言われています。
父が亡くなってから経済的な援助を受けられなくなったマーリーと母はトレンチタウン（ジャマイカ首都郊外のスラム街）に移り住み、のちにレゲエの父と呼ばれる「ジョー・ヒッグス」のスタジオでギターの弾き方や歌い方、ラスタファリズム（ラスタ思想）を教わったそうです。
この時、幼馴染のバニー・ウェーラー（ウェーラーズのオリジナルメンバー）も一緒にこのスタジオに出入りしていたことも知られています。
幼少期から複雑な家庭環境や運命的な出会いがあり、レゲエの神様「ボブ・マーリー」のアイデンティティが形成されていったんですね。
